Statistics from the CDC highlight the severity of oral health issues in children, particularly those from low-income families, who are twice as likely to suffer from cavities. Cavities are the most common chronic disease among children in the U.S., leading to pain, infections, and negative impacts on eating, speaking, playing, and learning. These issues can result in increased school absences and lower grades.
Teens Talk Teeth emphasizes the importance of effective oral health education in changing these statistics. As students ourselves, we noticed a gap in oral health discussions within school health education programs. We decided to take matters into our own hands and use a peer-led approach to convey the importance of good oral hygiene practices. By having high school students teach elementary school students about oral health, we hope to leverage the relatability and approachability of peer education and teach kids about good oral health habits like regular brushing, flossing, dental check-ups, and making good food choices.
